Attracting, interviewing and training new talent in key positions requires a considerable investment in time and resources. It’s a costly process. However, not as costly as hiring the wrong person. It’s not enough to rely on resumes, reputation and instinct alone, as is evidenced by the seemingly endless parade of fallen executives on the nightly news. Case Study
Recently, we were asked to conduct a comprehensive background investigation on a candidate for chief of police in a major city. After interviewing individuals who were not listed as references, it was discovered the candidate had a side business that was not allowed, and furthermore, was a conflict of interest. In addition, there were media articles and litigation found at a previous city involving the treatment of prisoners. However, he was vindicated of any wrongdoing.
The city passed on this candidate and another background was done on an applicant for the position. There was nothing found on this person that would have precluded him from consideration, and he was eventually hired.
